As we age our muscles become shorter and lose their elasticity. Aging can affect the structure of the bones and muscles causing pain and decreased range of motion in the shoulders, spine and hips. It becomes very important for seniors to maintain range of motion and ability to move all joints normally with activities during the day. And thus making exercise an important thing for the people belonging to all age groups.
One such exercise to help the elderly keep the muscles flexible and movements as smooth as possible are resistance training. These exercises help maintain flexibility and will help offset the effects of normal decline of the joints, and help to remain active and independent.
Great Times Club organized a workshop on “strength training” for our members and guests. The objective of the workshop was to help understand the importance of resistance training exercises and overcome the associated apprehensions.
The session was conducted by Dr. Vikas Lamba and Dr. Vivek Gaur and they explained various exercises that can be done at home easily. The session started with some of the upper body exercises to help relieve back aches.
Dr. Vivek Gaur, explained how reflexes are important for our body and for proper reflexes one needs to have a combination of mobility, strength and balance. All these three can be helped with doing some amount of exercise.
Then he demonstrated some exercises that help the various body parts and relieve muscle pains and stiffness. He used resistance stretch bands to show the exercises to the participants of the workshop.
The session was very interactive and helpful for the participating members. They learnt how they can with simple exercises help their muscles in becoming more flexible and strong and in turn reduce pains.
