Meeting people you know and love always gives one a good feeling, no matter what age you are at. Socialization gives a sense of joy, fulfillment and acceptance. A person with dementia may have forgotten the names and faces of people who were once very important to them, but somewhere deep inside they still long to meet people who will love and comfort them.
How does one embrace an aging body ? How indeed. Memories of youth come in the way. Memories of when running was easy and fun. Kicking a ball and running after it was fun. Future held promise and dreams were dreamt. There was a thick shock of hair to be styled, muscles to be exercised, skills to be mastered. Memories were to be made and not to be lived in.
We at Samvedna are running a campaign #SpendDiwaliWithElders to start a movement to encourage people to spend this Diwali with their elders, and make that extra effort to make them feel special.
Join us in spreading this message by participating in the #SpendDiwaliWithElders contest.
Every second Saturday of the month at Samvedna is reserved for our monthly Dementia Support Group meeting. This support group is for families of patients of Dementia and the objective is to share knowledge and information on Dementia and help families deal with the challenges associated with this illness.
I do understand that there is a section of our society that truly needs help in old age. And that includes me. But I also feel that if we create old age homes and institutions such as this, chances are that people will carry less guilt for leaving their parents, often suggesting that why don’t you join there instead of coming to us. No parent would like to be away from own child. Often mothers don’t reveal the physical and mental abuse that they go through. If instead, we could strengthen laws, so that children would be inclined to turn to parents, and if we made the views of elders count for changing the society, quite like using them like Roman elders, they would get more respect I suppose.
Assist seniors age gracefully, with dignity, independence, respect and provide them support with empathy, affection and patience in the second innings of their life.
