WAYS TO Enhance Mental Wellbeing in seniors

  1. STEP IT UP

A 30 minute daily walk can do wonders to your body as well as mind. Physical exercise has the best evidence for preserving memory and mental function with ageing.

  1. STAY SOCIAL

Social interaction enhances memory through its effects on mood. Socializing with family and friends is the best way for seniors to remain emotionally adjusted and happy. Join a senior activity center, join an elderly club, spend morning or evenings in a nearby park with the peer group, get involve in family gatherings, spend time with grandchildren.

  1. TURN ON THE TECHNOLOGY TO STAY IN TOUCH

There is no age of learning new things. Learning to operate technologies can help seniors to be in touch with their family and friends. Schedule regular phone calls, exchange emails, do skype calling and lots more. Staying in touch with people you love will keep you happy and healthy.

  1. CHALLENGE YOUR MIND

Mental exercise is equally important as physical exercise. Puzzles, games, music, socializing and having discussions on just about anything can help seniors improve and maintain their mental health. Try word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku and so on. The best part is, the list of activities is almost endless so the seniors can stick with things they like or explore new options as often as they wish.

  1. GET AMPLE REST

Many seniors develop disrupted sleep patterns as ageing progresses. Therefore taking proper rest is important to stay mentally fit.

Try these tips to get better sleep:

  • Avoid big meals before bed.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.
  • Don’t drink caffeine or alcohol close to your bedtime.

Eat whole fruits rather than juices and add variety of colour in your fruit diet. Eat food rich in antioxidants, calcium and proteins.

A day without a purpose can be depressing. So setting up a regular routine and following it is very important in maintaining a good mental health. If you don’t have a clear routine, chances are your mind is constantly wading through the possibilities and stressing about the future. Having a purpose in life will enhance the self-worth and keep you away from negativities.

  1. DO MORE OF WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

After having a busy professional life, it is time to follow your heart and do what makes you happy from within. Identify any activity that interests you and start giving time to it.

  1. AVOID NEGATIVE EMOTIONS

No matter how life goes on instead of worrying and being stressed it is best to keep positive thoughts. This can be attained by keeping your mind occupied by engaging yourself in various activities. Being grateful of the things you have is another way to stay positive and healthy.
