Police reported that a note referred to prolonged illness as a possible factor, although the circumstances remain under investigation.

This is particularly relevant on World Suicide Prevention Day, observed every year on September 10. In 2026, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) continues its three-year theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encouraging more open conversations around suicide and prevention.

For older adults, emotional distress may be linked to grief, chronic illness, pain, loss of independence, loneliness, financial concerns, or changes in memory and functioning. Depression may also look different in later life, sometimes appearing as fatigue, sleep problems, physical complaints, irritability, or withdrawal rather than obvious sadness.

So, what should caregivers look for?

1. A Combination of Risk Factors

There is no single sign that can predict suicidal behaviour. However, certain factors can increase vulnerability, particularly when several occur together.

These may include:

Depression: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, irritability, anxiety, or loss of interest.

Disease: A new or worsening medical condition, chronic pain, or a serious diagnosis.

Disability: A sudden loss of independence, mobility, or ability to manage everyday activities.

Disconnectedness: Loneliness, social isolation, or feeling forgotten or unsupported.

Access to potentially lethal means: Increased access to medications or other potentially dangerous means can become especially concerning when combined with suicidal thoughts.

The presence of these factors does not mean that an older adult is suicidal, but they are reasons to pay closer attention to their emotional wellbeing.

2. Sudden Changes in Routine and Self-Care

Sometimes, emotional distress shows up through changes in everyday behaviour.

You may notice that an older family member has stopped bathing regularly, is eating poorly, has lost interest in taking care of themselves, or is deliberately neglecting important medical care.

A sudden and unexplained improvement in mood after a period of severe distress can also warrant attention particularly if it occurs alongside other concerning changes, such as withdrawal, saying goodbye, or giving away possessions.

The key is to look for significant changes from the person’s usual behaviour, rather than assuming that one behaviour alone indicates suicide risk.

3. Talking About Being a Burden or Having No Purpose

Older adults may not always directly say, “I want to die.” Instead, they may express hopelessness, helplessness, or a sense that others would be better off without them.

Listen for statements such as:

“I am becoming a burden on everyone.”

“There is no point in me being here anymore.”

“My family would be better off without me.”

Don’t dismiss these comments as simply a part of ageing or as an attempt to seek attention.

If you hear them, take them seriously and gently ask what the person has been feeling and whether they have been thinking about hurting themselves or ending their life or a mental health therapist can support.

4. Unexpectedly Putting Affairs in Order

Making a will, organising finances, or discussing future plans can be completely normal.

What may be more concerning is a sudden, out-of-character urgency to settle personal affairs such as unexpectedly giving away treasured possessions, making unusual goodbye calls, or making significant arrangements without an apparent reason.

These behaviours are not proof of suicidal intent on their own. However, when they appear alongside hopelessness, withdrawal, or other warning signs, they should not be ignored.

5. Withdrawing From People and Activities

One of the most important changes caregivers may notice is withdrawal.

An older adult who once enjoyed meeting friends, speaking with family, attending social gatherings, or pursuing hobbies may suddenly stop participating. They may avoid visitors, stop answering calls, or spend increasing amounts of time alone.

Social isolation can deepen feelings of loneliness and worthlessness and may remove important sources of emotional support.

This is where timely emotional support matters. Online counselling for depression can provide older adults and their caregivers with an accessible way to connect with a qualified professional, particularly when mobility, health concerns, or distance make in-person support difficult.

What Can a Caregiver Do?

If you are worried about an older adult, don’t wait for the situation to become a crisis before starting a conversation.

Ask gently and directly about how they are feeling. If you are concerned about suicide, it is appropriate to ask whether they have had thoughts of dying or hurting themselves. Talking about suicide does not create suicidal thoughts; it can give someone an opportunity to speak about thoughts they may have been keeping to themselves.

Listen without judgement. If there is an immediate safety concern, stay with the person and seek urgent professional help through online counselling for depression. Where appropriate and safe, reduce access to potentially lethal means.

And remember you do not have to manage everything alone.

A mental health therapist can help assess emotional distress, understand contributing factors, and support both the older adult and the family. At Samvedna Care, professional support can also help caregivers understand what they are seeing and how to respond with greater confidence and compassion.

Not every change in an older adult means suicide risk. But a noticeable change should not automatically be dismissed as “just ageing.”

Sometimes, the most important first step is simply asking, “How have you really been feeling lately?”

Changing the narrative around suicide begins with making difficult conversations possible.

When an older adult
