India is going through a major demographic transition with the rapid swelling of the senior population. Low birth rates coupled with longer life expectancies push the population to an ageing one. According to census 2011, 8.6 % of India’s population is 60 years and above.

Ageing process is not only affected by the physiological changes in the body but also by changes in the psychosocial conditions. Being mentally healthy not only means absence of any psychological condition but the optimum use of our cognitive functions and an optimistic thought process.

DSC02922October 1st is celebrated as World Elder’s Day and Samvedna celebrated the occasion with its members with lots of fun filled activities. We also commemorated Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary as the following day was Gandhi Jayanti.

A painting competition was organized for our members in which they had to make a sketch of Gandhi Ji. The competitive spirit of our members was evident by the fine sketches each one of them made. In the background we played melodious songs of Geeta Dutt and it was a visual treat to see everyone humming to the songs and drawing their sketches in a very relaxed atmosphere.

How I turned my hobby into my purpose

tnI never bought sweaters for my children and always used to knit it myself. But when my children became a little old I started working and couldn’t pursue my hobby due to work pressure.

After retirement I started knitting again. Knitting gives me a sense of freedom as I can knit whenever I want. Also it keeps me always busy. Sometimes my children scold me also as I get a backache if I knit for too long.
